Directing the Soul through the Patawag

When retrieving the lost soul of a person stricken with fever or another type of illness, Apo Allang used to direct the soul back through the patawag or calling back ritual, also known as the alawen (to rescue). Prayers are initially given followed by obtaining an odd quantity of three, nine, and even up to twenty-seven newly husked grains of rice, which are then tossed into a bowl or dish of water. The rice with bubbles or those that remain afloat are considered the ones holding the person’s soul. Apo Allang would then call out, “Sumangpet kan Illiong, sumangpet kan. Napudot ti aldaw ket nalamiis ti rabii” (Come home Illiong [person’s name], come home. The day is hot and the night is cold). The floating rice is removed and wrapped with the sick person’s shirt from the inside with a string tied around it to keep it in place, or wrapped in a piece of cotton cloth and then pinned on the shirt of the sick person. Sometimes the sick person drinks the water. The soul then returns and the person is cured.
